The Julia Greeley Committee is our parish Social Concerns subcommittee on racial justice. Our mission is to educate our community on the rich contributions people of color have made to our faith and to work for racial justice. We have chosen Julia Greeley as our namesake and patron because of her work for justice and because of her devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus to which our parish has been enthroned.
About Julia Greeley
Julia Greeley was born into slavery in Missouri sometime between 1833 and 1848. Upon being freed by Missouri's Emancipation Act in 1865, she worked as a servant to several families, primarily in the Denver, Colorado area. She quickly became known for caring for the poor and desperate in her community, generously giving others anything beyond what she needed herself. When she didn't have any of her own resources to give, she begged on their behalf so that she could continue to provide for them. Julia Greeley became Catholic in 1880 at Sacred Heart Parish in Denver, where she developed a strong devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She entered the Secular Franciscans in 1901 and was active until her death in 1918. Her cause for canonization was opened in 2016. Read more about her and her cause for sainthood at the Julia Greeley Guild.
Please join us for a Mass of Reparation for All Sins Committed against the Dignity of the Human Person on Saturday, September 9, the Feast of St. Peter Claver at 12 pm. We will have a picnic lunch after Mass.
Why make reparation for sins that perhaps we ourselves have not committed? Christ's Passion and Death allows us to add our daily prayers, sacrifices, and sufferings to the suffering of our Lord. Further, we are all united in the Communion of Saints; because of this, we are able to make reparation for the sins of others by uniting in prayer. The Holy Mass is the representation of Christ's suffering on Calvary and one of the best ways of making reparation for the sins of humanity.
