The USCCB Respect Life Committee released a statement this month entitled “Building a Culture of Life in a Post-Roe World”. In this statement several key points were made that cut to the heart of the matter.
While overturning Roe was a victory for justice, which is important, justice alone is not sufficient. The principle that we need to establish in our society is what St. John Paul II called “radical solidarity”, making the good of others our own good, including mothers, babies, and families throughout the entire human lifespan. As St. Teresa of Calcutta stated, “we all belong to one another”. Abortion is a gruesome sign of how we have forgotten our mutual belonging.
The logic of Roe was that abortion was strictly an individual decision, that was done largely in isolation, and had no impact on anyone else. But in fact, the new life that was developing in the mother was already situated in a network of relationships with family, relatives, neighbors, and fellow citizens. Roe championed the autonomy of a woman’s “right” to use lethal force against her child. But in the culture of life, we recognize that the woman and her child are not alone, they are fellow members of our human family, and their vulnerability is a call for our service and support.
The call for radical solidarity leads us to address the underlying causes that make a child unwanted. While this can sometimes be complex and tangled, each step we take in this direction is building a culture where women are esteemed, children are loved, and men fulfill their responsibilities as fathers. Abortion not only kills a preborn child, it gravely wounds families, and our nation, degrades the practice of medicine, and corrupts our justice system.

Our Pro-Life Group meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 7 pm in the church to pray a Pro-Life Rosary. The Pro-Life Rosary is a beautiful way to pray for the unborn children and all who are affected by abortion. It is often prayed on a five decade rosary with different colored beads for different intentions, but any colored rosary will work. All are welcome to join us in person or at home.
