COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will examine the Prophets of Israel and their writings, considering the historical context of the original authors, their intended audience, and the purpose of writing. We will also study the interpretation of prophetic writings in light of late post-exilic writings and the New Testament.
 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Each class session has an assigned reading. Student is expected to read the text after each class.

We pray the Nicene creed at mass, but do you know how it came to be? Do you know the Fathers of the Church who helped articulate what we believe as Catholics? In this course, we will explore the Fathers from the Council of Nicaea (AD 325) through the 4th and 5th centuries starting with St. Athanasius down to St. Gregory the Great in the 6th and 7th and St. John of Damascus in the 8th. These men staunchly defended the faith against heresy and guided countless souls living out a Christian life. By engaging with the brilliant Christian minds, we will be able to explore more deeply the questions they dealt with:

1. Who is Jesus Christ?
2. How are we to interpret the Scriptures?
3. What is the Christian life?
